Creative Circle Talk with Nick Asbury
When Awards Believe Their Own Fairytales
Creative Circle has invited Nick Asbury — one of the advertising industry’s true intellectuals. His reflections on the credibility gap created by inflated case stories, “ad math” and award-season self-deception point to something deeper than bad PR. They raise a question about the integrity of our entire field — and whether we, as an industry built on storytelling, can afford to start believing our own.
This year more than ever, Cannes Lions has come under fire for case studies full of exaggerated claims and AI-enhanced fabrications. UK copywriter Nick Asbury has been among those leading calls for change. In this talk, he relates the awards issue to the larger stories we tell ourselves as an industry – most importantly the ‘purpose’ narrative that is the subject of Nick’s book ‘The Road to Hell: How purposeful business leads to bad marketing and a worse world (And how human creativity is the way out)’.
